Description
No 1 East Parade is a building dating from around 1790, currently functioning as the Ambassador Hotel and Restaurant. Originally, it served as a subscription library and is depicted in many historical prints of the town. The exterior is finished in painted stucco and features a parapet and a slate mansard roof. The building has three storeys and includes a wide bow window at the western end, with three sash windows on the first and second floors that do not have glazing bars. There is a moulded cornice at the floor levels, and the ground floor has a large modern restaurant window that projects out.
To the east, there is a projecting wing that is also stuccoed, with a parapet and a hipped roof covered in slurried tiles. The first floor of this wing has two sash windows with glazing bars, while the second floor has one sash window with glazing bars. The ground floor of this wing features a modern restaurant space.
Nos 1 to 11 East Parade form a group, with No 3 being of local interest only.
