Description
This is a gas lighting column that has been later converted to electricity, located opposite 22 St Mary's Terrace. It is of a standard design introduced from the late 1870s for the Hastings and District Gas Lighting Company, and is believed to have been erected between 1880 and 1890. The column is made of cast iron and stands about 8 feet high with an octagonal shape. It features two decorative bands and a moulded plinth that bears the inscription "HASTINGS AND ST. LEONARD'S GAS CO." At the top, there is an enlarged octagonal head fitted with an early 20th-century electricity switch and timer box. Above this, a swansneck bracket with paterae and a scrolled finial currently supports a late 20th-century lantern. This column is one of a series of three identical gas lighting columns in St Mary's Terrace.
