Description
Gaunt Cottage is a hall house with a former crosswing now known as Little Gaunt, which is a separate house. It dates from the late 15th century and has been altered over time. The structure is timber framed with painted brick and rendered infilling on a flint base, and the frame is exposed on the west gable. It features an old tile gabled roof with a flanking chimney to the right and a stack on the ridge near the center. The building has five framed bays and is two storeys high.
The road front has five upper 2-light casement windows that are irregular and include 19th-century lights. There is a six-panelled door on the left side, with the top panels glazed, set within an architrave surround and topped with a board hood supported by cut brackets. To the right of the door, there are two adjoining windows: a 3-light casement on the left and a fixed light on the right. To the left of the door, there is a two-storey angular bay with sash windows and glazing bars.
Inside, the cottage features a large 17th-century inglenook fireplace with a bread oven, and the good quality timber frame is exposed. The roof includes queen post trusses with curved wind braces, all of which show signs of soot.
