Description
The Bull Public House and Smithy is a public house and restaurant located on Barkham Road. It dates from the late 17th century and 18th century, with extensions and alterations made in the 19th century and further changes in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with the ground floor of the public house painted and old tile gabled roofs. It has an L-shaped layout, with the older part situated at the rear.
The public house features two storeys and an attic in the rear wing, with a chimney on the right end and another end chimney at the rear. The front has two bays, with 19th-century casement windows on the first floor and canted bay windows on the ground floor, all sheltered by a continuous hipped tiled hood. Inside, four beams are visible, showcasing chamfers and stopped ends, along with queen post roof trusses.
Adjoining on the east is the restaurant, which was formerly the smithy. This section is one storey with two bays, featuring a large sliding Yorkshire sash window with glazing bars on the road front, along with another similar window that is from the 20th century. A date panel to the left of the window reads "1728." The interior of the restaurant also reveals exposed queen post roof trusses and rafters, with a restored and complete furnace and chimney.
