Description

This group of nine tombs is located in the churchyard of St Nicholas, 12 metres west of the church. They date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. From north to south, the tombs include:

  1. A chest tomb for the Simonds family, circa 1829, made of stone with double inset panels.
  2. A chest tomb for the Harmon family, circa 1832, also made of stone with double inset panels and a low iron railing surrounding it.
  3. An early 19th-century chest tomb for the Simonds family, featuring a hipped slab and panelled, fluted pilasters at the corners.
  4. A late 19th-century chest tomb with a brick base.
  5. An early 19th-century sarcophagus-type tomb made of stone, which retains cast iron arrowhead rails and urn corner piers.
  6. A chest tomb for the Edmunds family, circa 1785, made of stone with fluted pilasters at the corners and raised inscription panels on the sides and ends, adorned with rosettes at the corners; the railings have been removed.
  7. A low sarcophagus-type tomb for Lt. Colonel Charles Rivers R.E., dated 1855, made of stone.
  8. A chest tomb for Vice Admiral Sir Thomas and Lady Dundas, early 19th century, made of stone with double panelled sides, enclosed by railings.
  9. A chest tomb for the Wise family, dated between circa 1837 and 1853, made of stone with panelled sides, also in a railed enclosure.
