Description
This barn, located approximately 25 metres north-east of the church, dates to around the late 15th or early 16th century, with extensions added in the 18th century and a north outshut in the 19th century. It is a timber-frame structure with weatherboarding. The roof is mainly thatched, with lower sections tiled in clay plain tiles. The south end is half-hipped, and the north end is fully hipped, with a gabled wagon entrance.
The barn’s layout is rectangular, comprising a circa late 15th or early 16th century core of five bays, including a midstrey (a central division) on the west side of the central bay, which incorporates five earlier arcade posts likely from a previous barn. East and west aisles were added in the 18th century, and a north outshut in the 19th century. The roof extends over the aisles to low eaves on the east and west sides, and over the outshut on the north end. The west front features a gabled midstrey.
Inside, the earlier arcade posts are jowled and have curved braces to the tie beams. The circa 16th century roof is a queen-post design with raking struts and two tiers of purlins; the lower are butt-purlins and the upper are clasped-purlins, along with straight wind-braces.
