Description

A group of four chest tombs, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, is located approximately 6 metres north-east of the north chapel of the Church of St Michael. These tombs are made of stone.

The southernmost tomb, closest to the church, commemorates the Pile family and dates from 1787 to 1857. It features a plain base, a moulded plinth, and moulded inset balusters at the corners, which flank inscription panels set in incised oval mouldings. It has a moulded cornice and a flat top.

The second tomb is a memorial to the Millard family, who lived from 1766 to 1808. It has a plain base, a moulded plinth, and incised corner pilasters that flank inscription panels in incised oval mouldings, along with a moulded cornice and flat top.

The third tomb is dedicated to the Newell family and is similar in design to the second tomb, but it formerly had a railed base. The inscriptions on this tomb are currently covered with ivy.

The fourth tomb commemorates the Clark family, who lived from 1771 to 1825. It features an enclosure plinth with a curved top, with the railings removed. It has a moulded plinth and incised inscription panels on all four sides, along with raised frieze corner moulding that includes bead and reel enrichment, topped with an open pediment.
