Description

The stables and gatehouse at Ockwells Manor date from the late 15th century, with the stables altered in the 19th century and restored in 1986. The structure is partly brick and partly timber-framed with brick infill, while the gatehouse is timber-framed with plaster infill and features an old tile gabled roof. The stables have a long rectangular plan consisting of 10 framed bays, with the gatehouse attached at a right angle on the southwest end, comprising 2 framed bays. The stables currently contain 6 stalls, although the upper level is now disused.

On the northwest front, the stables are arranged in 10 bays, featuring three gabled hay-loft openings with plank doors in the 3rd, 6th, and 9th bays, and a brick plinth. There are seven 2-light leaded casement windows with diamond mullions, all dating from the 20th century. Some close studding is visible in the timber frame of the end bay on the right.

Inside, the loft level has an old boarded floor made of wide planks, and the queen post roof trusses display carpenters' marks in the correct sequence. The gatehouse, located to the right over the cartway, has its timber frame exposed on all three sides and features a 3-light oriel window on the northwest with oak traceried and mullioned lights. Most of the timber frame on the west side has been replaced by a brick wall made of old bricks. The interior of the gatehouse has seen little alteration, with the timber frame exposed throughout on the first floor and a queen post roof. It is believed that the priest of the former chapel may have lived here.
