Description
Western Cottage and the adjacent lych gate date back to 1702 and are associated with a disused churchyard, though they have undergone significant alterations and a refacing around 1850-60. The cottage is two storeys high, with a stucco façade featuring rusticated quoins. It has a hipped tiled roof with flat eaves, a deep plat band, and sill courses. The entrance bay sits at an obtuse angle to the right of the front. The main bay has a subtle break in the centre. The first floor has one window flanked by pilasters with a keystoned blind archivolt above, creating a Venetian window effect. The ground floor has two windows with louvred shutters. A delicate early to mid-19th century iron trellis verandah frame is present, but without a roof. The doorway is flanked by panelled pilasters, large console brackets with bearded heads, and a cornice hood, with a window above. A plaque commemorates S J Stone, who lived at the cottage while curate of the parish church from 1863-70 and was the author of the hymn "The Church's one Foundation." A late 19th century timber-framed tiled roof lych gate adjoins the cottage.
