Description

The entrance gates and piers, terrace walls and steps, along with the adjoining New Lodge on the north side, were built around 1857 by T. Cubitt. These features create an entrance terrace that now encloses a car parking area. The walls are made of stock brick with stone dressings, and there are stone flights of steps and decorative elements.

On the east side, there are two gate piers made of stone with brick insets. These piers have octagonal roll-moulded shafts resting on square bases, with moulded plinths. The cornices are moulded and feature floral decorations, topped by a griffin holding a shield of arms, which sits on a four-stage base that has a quatrefoil carved on each face. The entrance is marked by two wrought-iron gates, which are decorated with open circles and scrolls, and feature an arrowhead top rail.

The walls extend to the west, north, and east, where they are complemented by the gate piers. The projecting plinth has weathered stone capping and moulded stone coping, with slightly projecting piers at regular intervals. There are flights of stone steps on both the east and west sides, each consisting of six steps, with weathered strings and four large square newels that have moulded plinths and cornices topped with urns.

At the higher level, smaller U-shaped terraces are enclosed by stone parapet walls, which feature pierced cusped balustrades and inset leaf ornament. The dies are carved and moulded, with moulded coping. The corner newels and piers are topped with urns and vases. Additionally, the top newels on each flight of steps have a pair of small wrought iron gates that match the style of the entrance gates and are adorned with rose ornament. This structure is included for its group value.
