Description
Magna Carta House is a Grade II listed building originally constructed in 1834 by George Simon Harcourt to commemorate the sealing of the Magna Carta. This small, irregular stone house is designed in a 'Norman' style, featuring many gables and an open porch. It has high-pitched roofs made of Welsh slate and cylindrical stone chimneys. The windows are round-headed with chamfered and moulded surrounds, and some are paired under drip moulds.
An early 20th-century extension has been added in a similar style, with painted brick walls and Welsh slate roofs that match the pitch of the original chimneys. The building is two storeys high with irregular fenestration that closely relates to the original design.
Inside, the house boasts much imported Jacobean panelling of good quality, along with some later stained glass. There are stone chimney pieces, including one that is round arched and another that is square and hooded. In the Magna Carta Room, there is an octagonal fixed wooden table with turned legs, featuring a circular commemorative stone let into the top.
