Description
Cedar House is a 17th-century building that was altered in the mid-18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame that is rendered and colourwashed, topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof. The house has two storeys and attics, with modern double-hung sash windows that include glazing bars, set in flush wood cases with tile sills and window shutters. The central ground floor window is a three-light design with wood mullions and glazing bars. To the right of this window is a door with a rusticated surround and a raised keystone. The building has raised bands on the first and second floors, with the second floor slightly shortened on the right due to the slope of the roof. There is also a one-storey outshut with one window on the right side of the ground floor.
Inside, Cedar House features ovolo-moulded painted panelling with a dado in the main ground and first floor rooms, along with two marble mantelpieces. There is a 17th-century staircase window with a wood mullion and transom, and the original doors are intact with locks. A late 18th-century wall painting can be found at the rear of the ground floor. It is reputed that Dr. Herschell, the astronomer, lived here around 1780, as noted in "The History of Datchet" by S. Osborn published in 1896.
