Description
Datchet House is an early 18th-century building that was extensively rebuilt and extended in the late 19th century. It features colourwashed brick and is two storeys high, with a string course at the first floor and a modillion eaves cornice beneath a slate hipped roof. The front elevation has five double hung sash windows with glazing bars set in reveals, with the two taller windows on the right side flanking a chimney that is flush with the wall. The ground floor has two double hung sash windows with glazing bars to the left of the doorway and two blocked windows on the right.
The garden elevation on the east side has five double hung sash windows with glazing bars in reveals on the first floor, with a plat band below. The ground floor is similar, but the second and fourth windows are French casements. An impressive late 18th-century doorcase made of stripped deal features engaged columns with "Tower of the Winds" capitals, a dentil and modillion entablature, and a pediment. The entrance includes a six-panel door and an exceptionally fine traceried rectangular fanlight.
Inside, there is a good 18th-century staircase in the central hall, which has twisted balusters and carved spandrels. Extensive carved panelling and doorcases are found in the hall, stairway, and principal ground floor and first floor rooms, which were inserted in 1880.
