Description

The Rails is a cottage, now a small house, dating from the mid-16th century, with extensions from the 17th century and alterations in the 20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill and has an old tile gabled roof. The building follows a T-plan, originally consisting of two framed bays, with an additional framed bay added to the right. It is two storeys high, with two chimneys, one featuring clay pots. C19 and C20 casement windows are fitted with glazing bars. The north-east facing front, which faces The Green, has scattered fenestration. The left-hand section is set back, featuring a single 2-light window on the first floor, a single-light window on the ground floor, and a lean-to entrance porch in the corner, with a plank door and a small wooden fence and gate. A gabled section is situated in the centre, with a projecting chimney to the left. A plinth runs along the base. This central section features two 2-light windows on both floors. The right-hand section has a lower roof ridge, with a 2-light window on the right of the first floor and a similar window on the left of the ground floor. Internally, a fragment of 17th-century wall panelling has been incorporated from another location.
