Description
The Mausoleum of the Duchess of Kent, built in 1861, was started during her lifetime and designed by architect A J Humbert. It features heavy late French neo-classical details, including a galleried, ribbed copper dome atop a rotunda made of Portland stone ashlar. This rotunda is surrounded by a colonnade of pink granite with bronze Ionic capitals and bases, and bronze urns adorn the entablature. The structure has a rusticated basement. The main approach, which faces a bridge over the lake, includes a double flight of balustraded steps and a heavily rusticated retaining wall with a central niche and bust. This wall returns to meet a terrace in front of a heavily rusticated projecting portal leading to the basement of the rotunda, which features heavy panelled round-headed gun metal doors. The interior was designed by Professor Gruner of Dresden and includes heraldic painting, along with a statue of the Duchess created by William Theed the younger.
