Description
Frogmore House is a Grade I listed building dating from around 1680, likely designed by Hugh May for his nephew Thomas. The house underwent alterations in the mid-18th century and was recased in 1792 by James Watt for Queen Charlotte. It features a stucco-faced central block with three stories and seven bays, flanked by lower wings. In the early 19th century, the house was enlarged with bow-fronted pavilions connected to the main block by one-storey portico links that have entablatures. The windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes, and there is a projecting eaves cornice beneath a hipped slate roof. The Tuscan colonnade on the ground floor of the main block was originally open but is now glazed. The east entrance front has a porte cochere with double columns. Inside, there is a grand staircase that splits into two return flights, featuring a wrought iron balustrade. One room has delicate paintings by Mary Moser, showcasing flower garlands on the walls and ceiling. A gallery on the first floor runs through the house from front to back and features Pompeian decoration, possibly done by Princess Elizabeth, the daughter of George III.
