Description
Prince Albert's Dairy and Cottage dates back to around 1830-1840 but was refaced between 1850 and 1861 when the dairy itself was constructed and decorated. The building is two stories high, made of stock brick with ashlar dressings, and features heavy Italianate details. It has pendant finialed brackets at the eaves of its hipped roof and grouped chimneys. The windows are two- and three-light casements set within architraves. The dairy is located on the north side and includes a four-bay arcaded screen or verandah, which is set back and has a pierced stone balustrade topped with spiked ball finials.
The interior is the standout feature, decorated entirely with Minton tiles and faience, likely designed and partially executed by John Thomas, the sculptor for Prince Albert. The interior showcases bright polychromy, elaborately decorated piers with brackets, and a pierced compartmented ceiling for ventilation. The floors and walls are tiled, featuring blue and white plaques of putti and a frieze with portrait medallions of the Royal children. There are marble-topped tables and heron fountains at each end, along with marginal glazed stained glass, creating a picturesque atmosphere.
