THE HOME PARK Prince Albert's Dairy and Cottage

II* The Dairy Cottage dates back to circa 1830-40 but was refaced circa 1850-61 with the erection and decoration of dairy itself. Two storey stock brick and ashlar dressings, heavy Italianate detail. Pendant finialed brackets to eaves of hipped roof, grouped chimneys. Two- and three-light casements in architraves. The dairy is on north side with four bay arcaded screen or verandah, set back pierced stone balustrade with spiked ball finials.

The interior is the principal feature: decoration entirely of Minton tiles and faience probably designed and partly executed by Prince Albert's sculptor John Thomas. Bright polychromy. Elaborately decorated piers with brackets, pierced compartmented ceiling for ventilation. Tiled floor and walls, blue and white plaques of putti and frieze with portrait medallions of the Royal children. Marble top tables. Heron fountains each end. Marginal glazed stained glass. Picturesque.
