Description

Woolley Firs is a large house that has been converted into an educational establishment. It dates from around 1700 and the late 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th century and alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring both Flemish bond and English bond styles. It has a hipped roof covered with old tiles at the front, which is concealed by a parapet, and a part slate roof at the rear. Originally designed with a central staircase plan, the house now has extensions on the south side.

The house is two storeys tall and has several chimneys. The north front, which serves as the entrance, is a facade that reflects the 1700 core of the building. It is symmetrical with five bays, a projecting plinth, and a parapet. The windows are sash style with thin glazing bars and gauged brick heads, and they have stone cills. The entrance features a 20th-century half-glazed door in the center, topped by a 20th-century pedimented hood supported by square columns.

At the rear, there is an added range with a gabled slate roof, featuring four bays. The first floor has sash windows with thin glazing bars, while the ground floor includes two 20th-century four-light casement windows, a 20th-century hipped glazed porch in between, and a 20th-century hexagonal bay on the right-hand corner with casement windows and glazing bars.

Inside, there is an early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with three flights, a moulded handrail, and newel posts, along with a closed string. The first floor features an early 18th-century panelled landing and panelled shutters on the windows.
