Description

Castle Houses, now flats, represent an early 19th-century remodelling of a group of 18th-century buildings. The structures are built of stuccoed red brick with clay tile roofs.

The south front, along Old Bath Road, consists of numbers 46, 48, and 50. Numbers 46 and 48 are three stories high, with seven bays each, featuring paired prostyle Doric porticoes. An eighth two-story bay extends to the west, appearing to be an addition as part of number 50, and sharing a common roof with it; this section has a full-height canted bay window. The eastern return of number 46 is three bays wide, with the northernmost bay being canted. Hipped roofs are hidden behind a parapet. The windows are recessed sash windows with glazing bars. Number 46 also has a later two-story, three-bay range to the north, which is not considered to be of particular interest.

Number 50 is two stories high and has two bays facing south, with three bays visible on the western return. The western return features a pedimented Doric portico. The building has pitched roofs, a parapet on the southern elevation, and eaves on the western return. Recessed sash windows with glazing bars are present.

The interiors of the buildings have not been inspected.

Historical records indicate that the buildings have been known by various names, including Castle Houses and the Castle Inn. Sources suggest they were built as a coaching inn between 1753 and 1755. In the 19th century, the buildings were used as a private girls' school.

Castle Houses, encompassing numbers 46, 48, and 50 Bath Road, are designated at Grade II for their architectural interest as a significant group of 18th-century buildings substantially remodelled in the early 19th century.
