Description
Mortimer Bridge is a single-span overbridge that carries Station Road over the Great Western Railway branch line. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a semi-elliptical arch, with a string course on both external elevations and copings made of dressed stone. The original sloping retaining walls at the abutments are still intact on all four corners of the bridge. The design is relatively simple, lacking distinct terminal piers. The parapet ends have been rebuilt in Flemish bond brickwork at three locations: both ends of the south-west parapet and the south-east end of the north-west parapet. Aside from these small areas of rebuilding, the brickwork remains consistent and original.
Metal oval plaques on the north-west and south-east ends of the parapets indicate that the bridge is 31 miles from Paddington. Typically, such distances are painted directly on the wall of GWR bridges, suggesting this may be a unique feature of the Basingstoke branch line.
