Description
Inkpen House, formerly known as The Old Rectory, is a late 17th-century rectory that has been converted into a private house. It features red brick construction with a tile-hung south elevation and a hipped tiled roof, presenting a rectangular plan. The building is two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and includes a projecting plinth, a band, a coved timber eaves cornice, and flanking stacks.
On the north elevation, there are three pedimented dormers, with the central one featuring a curved pediment. The façade includes seven glazing bar sash windows, with the third and fifth being narrower. The entrance is a central six-panelled door, adorned with a radiating wrought iron and cast lead fanlight, set within an early 19th-century surround of pilasters and an entablature, complete with a panelled frieze and flat hood, accessed by three steps.
The south elevation displays three hipped dormers with two-light casements and six windows arranged in three groups of two. To the left, there are two glazing bar sashes above two mullion and transomed casements with leaded lights. The central section features mullion and transomed casements with leaded lights that illuminate the staircase landings, with a door to the left on the ground floor. To the right, there are two glazing bar sashes, with the left-hand one on the ground floor having opening panels below the cill for garden access.
Inside, the house boasts a large central entrance and staircase hall, divided by two depressed arches with moulded keys and panelled soffits. This space is supported by a central fluted Doric column and Doric pilasters. The grand open newel staircase features turned balusters, moulded strings, and handrails, along with a raised and fielded panelled dado that extends the full height of the house. The main rooms retain contemporary cornices, panelling, and fireplaces.
