Description

Sheffield Lock is a lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, dating from the early 18th century. Originally turf-sided, it was enlarged in the mid-18th century and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The lock features brick chamber walls with 11 scalloped bays and brick coping. It has two sets of double wooden gates, all equipped with mechanical gate paddle gearing. There are concrete and brick heelgrip platforms. The Kennet Navigation was established by 1724 and was acquired by the Kennet and Avon Canal Company in 1812, with John Hore serving as the engineer for the Navigation and John Rennie for the Canal. The lock is also designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
