Description
The barn at Woolley Farm, located on the east side of the farmyard, dates from the first half of the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century and further changes in the early to mid-20th century. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding set on a brick and stone plinth. The structure consists of eight bays and is aisled, with two hipped-roofed midstrays on each side. The midstrays have board doors fitted with strap hinges that have heart-shaped ends.
On the road elevation, the right bay has been rebuilt in brick and has a half-hipped roof, while a brick addition at the left end is not of special interest. At the rear, the right door has been broken down, and the left door includes an inset pedestrian door; a range added on the left is also not of special interest.
Inside, the barn features jowelled posts on brick plinths with straight braces extending up to tie-beams and arcade plates, and down to base wall ties, some of which curve slightly. The wall framing lacks a mid-rail and includes long raking braces along with old weatherboard from the former rear wall. The roof trusses are constructed with double, stepped, collared queen posts, clasped through purlins, and a square section ridge-piece that has been partly replaced. Some rafters and braces have been replaced, and much of this work was likely completed in 1938, as indicated by the date inscribed on a bracket of the front wall post, which is the third from the left.
