Description
The Old Farm House Public House, dated 1611 with the initials E. R. in the brickwork, likely has an earlier core. This site was home to a grange of St Denys Priory during the Middle Ages, and a map from 1560 indicates a farmhouse here. Local legend suggests there is a tunnel linking this building to Bitterne Manor. The structure is two storeys high, built of red brick on a stone base that may be part of an earlier building. It features a moulded carved corbelled brick stringcourse at the first floor level in the central part of the front, and has an irregular elevation with two gables. The upper part includes timber-framing. There are two large restored chimney stacks with diamond-shaped shafts grouped together. The roof is modern and tiled, and the windows have been replaced. The original oak panelled door, which is iron studded, is set within a later brick porch. Inside, the first floor rooms showcase exposed windbraces, and the roof is constructed with queen posts. The parlour features an early 16th-century stone fireplace with a four-centred arch, panelling, and a fine carved over mantel dating from around 1611.
