Description
The monument, located in the center of the Green near the junction with Padwell Road, was erected in 1909. It is a commemorative structure presented to the town of Southampton by a resident to celebrate his 60th birthday. The monument features two square stone pillars, with the central pillar being larger and topped with stone urns, all linked by a stone screen. The central urn displays scenes from the history of Southampton; one side depicts Canute rebuking his courtiers, while the other shows 'The Mayflower' departing for the New World. The urn's handles are designed in the shape of ship prows. The other urns are adorned with lion head masks, swags, and flowers.
