Description

Canute Chambers is an office building located on Canute Road in Southampton, built in 1893 for the American Line. The structure is made of Flemish bond red brick with Portland stone dressings and features a clay plain tile roof that is gabled and half-hipped, along with brick axial stacks. The building has a rectangular plan, cross-gabled to the right and a central entrance, reflecting Queen Anne and Dutch Renaissance architectural styles.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with an asymmetrical north front that includes a large two-bay Dutch gable on the right. This gable is divided into five stages and features a semi-circular pediment, a datestone inscribed with the year 1893, cornices, and blind arcading. The first and second floor windows have moulded brick architraves with keystones and cornices. Below the second floor windows, there is a stone frieze inscribed with "Canute Chambers." The large ground floor windows have cambered arches with keystones, and the left window retains its sashes with pilasters. To the left of centre, there is a large canted bay window with a modillion cornice and a central porch that has a scrolled pediment, an arcaded overlight, and double doors with scrolled pediments on the centre panels. The eaves on the left are lower, with dormers above that have semi-circular pediments. The rear elevation is similar but simpler.

The interior has not been inspected. Canute Chambers was originally built for the American Line, later occupied by the Great White Star Line in 1907, and then taken over by the United States Line in 1931, which used the offices until 1969.
