Description
The Church of St Michael is a Church of England building located on Church Road in Tilehurst. The south aisle dates back to the early 14th century, while the brick tower, constructed in 1737, features red and grey brick in an English bond pattern with header bond corner piers. The remainder of the church was built by Street in 1856 and includes a stone spire with brick banding, angle pinnacles, flying buttresses, and large gablets. The church is a three-bay hall structure made of squared and knapped coursed flint on a stone plinth, with stone strings and dressings, and has an old tile roof. The chancel has two bays and there is a short north transept that breaks the line of the aisles. The south door has a cusped surround. The tower displays datestones reading DW 17 R.?O R.?C 37 1737 17?71, with another datestone located on the opposite side of the road at No. 4 Church Cottages, dated 1779.
Inside, the church is plain but features a large and ornate alabaster monument to Sir Peter Vanlore, who died in 1627, along with depictions of his wife and children. The east window of the south aisle is said to be by William Morris, created in 1869. There is also a large brass commemorating Gavin More, who died in 1479. The churchyard contains various 17th and 18th-century headstones, many of which are double.
