Description

The Anglian Cross, erected in 1909, is a memorial located in Forbury Gardens. It commemorates Henry Beauclerk, King of England, who founded Reading Abbey on June 18, 1121, and was buried before its high altar on January 4, 1136. The monument features a tall, tapering granite shaft set on three steps and is topped with a ringed cross. On the north side, it displays the badge of the Plantagenets, which consists of three leopards, while the south side features the badge of the abbey, represented by three scallops. The initiative to erect this monument was led by local antiquary Dr. James on Hurry.
