Description
The archway connecting Forbury Gardens to the Abbey Ruins, along with the retaining walls flanking the path to the Abbey Ruins, dates from the mid-19th century and incorporates numerous fragments from the 12th-century Abbey. The base is constructed of flint, and the high parapet walls are also notable. The soffit is made from reused ashlar taken from the Abbey. The voussoirs feature sculptured fragments, including roll-mould, chevron, and catshead designs. Each corner of the archway has imposts formed from double nook shaft capitals. The retaining walls on either side of the alley leading to the Abbey Ruins contain many additional fragments, including the capital from the north-west crossing pier.
