Description
The Church of St James's is a Roman Catholic church built between 1837 and 1840 by architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. It features an atypical Norman style and has undergone significant alterations, notably in 1925 by W.C. Mangan, who added the south aisle and apse ambulatory, and in 1962 by Bingham Towner, who modified the north aisle. The church is constructed of flint with Bath stone ashlar dressings and has a Roman tile roof. It has coped gables with footstones and a belfry at the west end.
The west front includes an oculus at the top and a large round-headed window flanked by a blind arcade. There is a projecting porch with a central break and angled corners, featuring a round-headed doorway with two orders decorated with chevron patterns. The east end has three apses, with the central apse containing an ambulatory. The south aisle consists of three bays and has a six-bay double arcade inside. Notably, the north-east pier displays a fragment of beaded 12th-century carving.
Inside, the church features a wooden roof and a vaulted apse. The font is made from re-used stone that includes 12th-century interlacing from the nearby Abbey. This church was Pugin's first design, and its Norman style was likely influenced by the proximity of the Abbey remains.
