Description
Nos. 1-9 Oaklands is a three-storey block built with heavily raked dark brickwork, featuring horizontal white weatherboarding and bands of black vertical boarding on the upper floors, topped with flat roofs. The building contains five maisonettes on the upper two floors and four flats below, each with its own external doorway on the east side. The flats offer 1-2 bedrooms, while the maisonettes have 2-3 bedrooms and balconies attached to their first-floor living rooms.
The east side, which serves as the entrance, has projecting brick walls that create a series of irregularly-shaped yards, enclosed by white boarded timber gates. The original front doors are made of white-painted timber with two large glazed panels. The windows are centrally-hinged black timber casements, with those on the upper floors set within bands of black vertical boarding. The taller living-room windows contribute to a varied pattern of fenestration. On the west side, the flats feature glazed sliding doors with black timber surrounds that open onto semi-enclosed patios. A continuous balcony at first-floor level has a parapet lowered in sections to provide views from the maisonette living rooms.
Inside, original fittings such as built-in cupboards, glazed partitions between living rooms and kitchens, and timber handrails on the stairs are preserved to varying extents throughout the estate.
