Description
The Riverside Garden Pavilion at Caversham Court is a building from the early to mid 17th century, possibly dating to 1617. It was constructed by the Lovedays of Caversham Court and is located at the south-west corner of the garden, accessible via a raised walk from the main axial terrace. The pavilion has a square plan and stands two storeys high. The first floor is timber framed and accessed from the raised terrace, while the ground floor, which serves as a battered basement, is made of brick in an early example of Flemish bond. It features a hipped roof covered with old tiles.
On the first floor, the room designed for river views includes an original "Ipswich" type casement window facing south and east, along with an original six-panel door. The west entrance to the ground floor room is framed by a rusticated flint surround. The south side of the pavilion has a blind oculus that may have originally had a cruciform opening. There is an altered doorway on the east side, and the pavilion once had a windvane dated 1663.
