Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Church of England building constructed between 1872 and 1873 by W.A. Dixon. It is a large church designed in the Early English style, built from rock-faced Kentish Ragstone, with red Mansfield stone and Bath stone dressings. The church features a south-west tower that includes angle buttresses and two light openings at the bell stage. It is adorned with gargoyles and machicolation beneath a brick spire with gables. The front of the tower has a columned doorway with a carved lunette and an applied crocketted gable above it. The west front is highlighted by a tripled window with stilted arches, and half octagon turrets of varying heights flank this facade. The church has a tall short nave and chancel, along with gabled aisle chapels. Notably, the stonework around the foundation stone was excavated to remove the foundation stone.
