Description

No 44, known as The Acacias, is a detached villa located on London Road, dating from before 1840, as shown on the Weller map. This two-storey building, with a basement, is constructed of Bath stone and features a hipped slate roof and a moulded eaves cornice. The first floor has three windows, while the ground floor has two, all of which are glazing bar sashes flanked by full-height pilaster strips. The central door is topped with a segmental patterned fanlight and is accessed via a plain Greek Doric porch set on stone steps.

On the east side, there are two ground floor bow windows, which are believed to be alterations made by architect Waterhouse for William Isaac Palmer, who was associated with Huntley and Palmers. One of these bows includes stairs leading to the basement. At the rear, there is a good conservatory accompanied by an extensive rockery. The villa is connected to Greenbank by a three-storey extension featuring three windows, along with a two-storey pavilion to the right.

Inside, the villa showcases several reeded features, including the surround of the front door and the fireplace in the ground floor back room. The property also boasts excellent contemporary ironwork along the street, including spearhead railings, box panel standards, and double gates.
