Description

A pair of houses, dating from the 1840s to 1850s, located on Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth. The houses are stuccoed and have a Welsh slate roof with a brick stack at the centre. They are two storeys and have an attic, arranged with three bays in total, one wide bay at No. 73 and one wide and one narrow bay at No. 75. Rusticated pilasters with large, plain splayed capitals define the quoins and frame each bay window. To the left of No. 73 and to the right of No. 75, right-angled flights of four stone steps lead to landings, featuring ornate iron balusters and a guard rail. Each landing has a four-panelled door with glazed upper panels and a fanlight set under a round arch. The houses each have a two-storey, tripartite mullioned canted bay window to the ground and first floors. The centre of each bay has a two-leaf four-pane casement with a two-pane fixed overlight, and narrower flanking casements set under cambered arches. The first-floor windows are similar, but smaller. A ground-floor verandah runs across the front, with a metal tented roof supported by six bulbous-headed, round rendered columns, and a fretted eaves board. Each house has a facing attic gable with shaped bargeboard and spiked finial, projecting verge, and a two-pane sash set under a cambered arch. The interior of the properties was not inspected.
