Description
Public house, circa 1900, designed by architect AE Cogswell. The building is constructed in glazed brick and red brick laid in stretcher bond with faience mouldings and dressings. The roof is interlocking tiled with a moulded stone-capped chimney stack at the centre.
The exterior is five bays and two storeys. At the centre is an open recess with two central cast-iron columns. At each side of the recess is a light brown faience pilaster supporting three round faience arches. A canted bay window at the centre has rounded corners to the glazed brickwork below the sill. The 2-light transomed front casement has eight upper panes and 1-light side casements, each with six upper panes, all with leaded lights and stained glass.
Within the recess, to left and right, are 2-leaf half-glazed doors with etched glass, each leaf with four small lower panels and moulded top and middle rails to the glass panel. Mullioned and transomed 16-pane overlights with leaded lights and stained glass are set above. Left and right returns have fixed panels similar to the doors and overlights. To left and right is a transomed casement with, over the transom, a round-headed 4-pane fixed casement, each pane with leaded lights and stained glass, keystone and banded sill, all set within light green glazed brick panels. Flanking each casement is a light brown faience pilaster. A brown faience entablature runs across the front. At the far left is a 20th-century 1-storey entrance door with fanlight providing access to the flat above. Four attached brass lanterns are fixed to the front face.
On the first floor, at the centre is a recessed sash window with an upper leaf featuring a round head with 15 panes, set within splayed brick jambs under a gauged brick round arch. Flanking stone pilasters with banded stone cornices are positioned to each side. To left and right are canted oriel windows, each with a wide front sash (upper leaf with 15 panes) and narrow side sashes. Each oriel has a facing cornice and tented roof, with a stone curved pediment with carved foliated relief below and a stone-panelled apron. A projecting stone arch with keystone supports a facing gable with moulded stone-coped parapet. An oculus sits within the gable. To the far left and far right is a sash window, each with a 12-pane upper leaf set under a gauged brick round arch with keystone and a moulded stone apron with swag carving. A stone entablature runs across the front. Above the central window is a stone panel set between pilasters with curved moulding coping and flanking consoles. Lettering within the panel reads "The Fountain". The left and right brick returns to the front face have facing gables and large sash windows to the rear elevation.
The interior retains original features including an ornately carved wood back fitting with moulded baluster-type supports to shelves, carved wood round arches at the top and flanking pediments. Three cast-iron fireplaces have patterned jambs and heads with moulded cornice shelves. Round-headed mirrors above the shelves have moulded cast-iron jambs and heads.
The subsidiary features include a boundary wall on the far right with an entrance to the yard in red brick, flanked by two stone-capped gate piers.
