Description

PORTSMOUTH

SU60NE HAVANT ROAD, Farlington 774-1/2/170 (North side) Bridges & Faulkner Monument, approx 4m S of SW corner of Church of St Andrew

GV II

Chest tomb. c1791. Ashlar. Podium with moulded cap and base set on plinth. Long side facing north has at each end a female figure holding swag at top between figures. Die has 2 recessed panels with inscriptions "John Bridges died September - 1971 Aged 58 years" and "In memory of Harriet Faulkner - - -" Remainder of inscription illegible except date "1883". Long side facing south has inscription "In affectionate remembrance of Francis Faulkner who died at Petersfield 18th May 1870 aged 84 years, and of Mary Anne, his wife who died at Portsmouth 9th September 1878 aged 48 years, also four of their children ------, Caroline, Mary Anne and Alfred." Remainder of inscription illegible. East end face has inscription "Richard, Son of John and Susanna Bridges died in his infancy". Some ivy and vegetation growth to monument.
