Description

The Bridges and Faulkner Monument is a chest tomb located approximately 4 meters south of the southwest corner of the Church of St Andrew in Portsmouth. It dates from around 1791 and is constructed of ashlar stone. The monument features a podium with a moulded cap and base set on a plinth.

On the long side facing north, there are female figures at each end holding a swag at the top, positioned between the figures. The die of the tomb has two recessed panels with inscriptions: one panel reads "John Bridges died September - 1971 Aged 58 years" and the other is in memory of Harriet Faulkner, though the remainder of the inscription is illegible except for the date "1883."

The long side facing south includes an inscription that states, "In affectionate remembrance of Francis Faulkner who died at Petersfield 18th May 1870 aged 84 years, and of Mary Anne, his wife who died at Portsmouth 9th September 1878 aged 48 years, also four of their children ------, Caroline, Mary Anne and Alfred." The rest of this inscription is also illegible.

The east end face has an inscription that reads, "Richard, Son of John and Susanna Bridges died in his infancy." The monument shows some growth of ivy and vegetation.
