Description
No. 8 French Street, also known as Popinjays Warehouse and The Mayor's Stables, is a warehouse located in Portsmouth. The original structure on the ground floor may date back to the late medieval period but was certainly in existence by the late 16th century or early 17th century. The upper floors were constructed in the 18th century, with some repairs made around 1800. The ground floor features north and south elevations made of limestone blocks, while the upper levels are built of red brick in a mix of English garden wall bond and Flemish bond. The building has a plain tiled roof with a half hip to the west and stands two storeys tall. The west front includes two cambered window openings and a central hoist with a cambered opening, along with a cambered door on the ground floor. Inside, there is a four-bay queen post roof with an inserted ridgepiece and diagonal tension braces.
