Description
The Customs Watch House, now a house, features an attached walkway and observation hut. It was built in the late 18th century and has been altered, with a 1952 addition. The walkway and observation hut were added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with grey headers in Flemish bond and has a hipped mansard roof covered in plain tiles, with a brick stack on the right. The extension is made of red brick in stretcher bond. The observation hut is weatherboarded and topped with a pyramidal lead roof that has a finial. The structure is two storeys high with an attic, consisting of two bays and a two-bay extension to the left. There are double doors on the right beneath a segmental arch, which has brackets from a former cartouche above. The first-floor sash window is set below flat gauged brick arches. A late 20th-century lantern is fixed to the wall, and there is a brick dentil cornice and a coped parapet. A late 20th-century two-light dormer is present, and the rear has been significantly altered, featuring a canted bay window. A renewed attached walkway at first-floor level connects to the observation hut. The interior has not been inspected.
