Description
Grange Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th to 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and incorporating parts of older buildings. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic.
The north elevation has a slightly projecting section on the left and a central part with one bay of three-light casements, which are leaded to the attic. There is a 19th-century wooden hoodmould under stucco above a first-floor window, while the ground floor has been altered to include a door and window beneath a slate pentice roof. A large stone chimney stack is located on the right, featuring tiled offsets and a rebuilt brick shaft with a corbelled toothed head and a small stone panel dated 1773.
The west elevation consists of three bays of 19th-century stone mullioned windows, with a three-light window on the left and two-light windows on the right. There is a door to the right of centre in a rectangular stone surround with a three-centred arched head, an entablature inscribed with "SOBRIE IVSTE PIE" on the frieze, and dated 1601 on the arch. The east front has angular windows, also leaded to the first floor.
Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered beams and a short section of a 16th-century staircase on the attic floor, which has turned and carved heavy dumbbell balusters and a wide moulded handrail. A doorway from the upper staircase landing has a deep moulded oak surround with a 'tulip' slip and an old ledged door, likely from the 15th century.
