Description
The Old Bakehouse is a building with origins in the 16th or 17th century, possibly even earlier, and was extended in the 17th century and early to mid-19th century. It is two storeys tall, constructed of roughcast brick, and features two cross wings, with the western wing being an 18th-century addition. The building has renewed wood casements and three gabled dormers positioned between the cross wings, topped by a tiled roof.
Inside, various parts of the timber framing are exposed. The central section appears to be the oldest and may have originally included an open hall and a through passage, with visible wall posts and rough-hewn beams. There are large open fireplaces situated back to back. On the first floor, one windbrace and purlins remain, along with part of the original west gable end featuring collars and studding. The eastern section may be slightly later but still retains the former south timber-framed exterior wall and some wattle and daub infill. Notable features include a bread oven and a salt cupboard. The staircase and entrance have been removed, and there is a late 19th-century south wing added to the eastern part.
