Description

Brayfield House is a country house that has been converted into some flats. It was mainly built in the early 19th century, with later 19th-century additions, and incorporates parts from the 18th century and earlier at the back. The front is made of ashlar stone with slate roofs on the 19th-century south block, while the back features rubble and tiles. The house is two storeys high, with a three-storey central feature and attics at the back.

The south front has a right-hand section with nine bays, where the three central bays form a two-storey segmental bow. Above this is a pedimented central block with one second-floor sash window. There is a cornice above the first floor and a cill band below. The ground floor sash windows extend down to ground level and are covered by an elaborate cast iron verandah with a lattice entablature and gothic pattern openwork piers.

The east elevation has one bay projection on each side of a recessed bay with a 20th-century stone porch, and the ground floor sashes are set in blank arches. The west wing, added in the later 19th century, features a conservatory with five bays, stone pilasters, a cornice, and a parapet. The first floor is set back and has two sashes, while the two-storey western block has three sashes on the south side, five on the west elevation, and a one-storey stone bow window on the ground floor.

The rear elevation is irregular, with two gabled 18th-century sections in the centre. The older wing, which has been altered in the 18th century, is on the western side and has tiled roofs with stone-coped gables. Inside, there is a good mahogany staircase with an inlaid handrail and shaped tread ends, along with an ornamental plaster cornice in the stairwell. The drawing room, located in the bow fronted bays, features an 18th-century carved wood chimney piece and an ornamental plaster cornice.
