Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church that dates from the 12th to the 15th century and was restored in 1862. It is constructed of stone and features a flat roof with battlemented parapets on both the tower and nave, while the chancel and south porch have an old tile roof. The 14th-century tower consists of three stages with angle buttresses and an octagonal stair turret on the south side, topped with a battlemented parapet.
On the south wall of the nave, there is a Norman window above the south door, a 13th-century lancet at the west end, and a large 13th-century window with intersecting tracery at the east end. The north aisle includes a 14th-century nave arcade with two bays. The chancel, which is from the 13th and 14th centuries, features a 14th-century arcade of two bays connecting it to the north chapel, with piers that have clustered shafts. Both the chancel and chapel contain 14th-century piscinal.
Inside, there is a tall tower arch and stone vaulting below the bell chamber. Notable fittings include a 15th-century front with traceried panelling and a 17th-century pulpit. There is also a monument in the north chapel by Andrews of Olney, which features pilasters flanking a panel and supporting a cornice that is broken forward over the pilasters, with urn finials and a curved pyramidal head adorned with arms. Below this is a semi-circular apron with a bracket at the floor, formed from a cherub's head.
