Description
This is a terrace of five houses located on St Margaret's Street in Rochester. The terrace dates to the late 18th century, although number 20 was substantially rebuilt in 1982. The houses are constructed of red brick with a Kent-tile mansard roof, which features dormers. The design presents as a unified terrace, but the end houses have different ground floor plans.
The houses are two storeys high with an attic. The front elevation has a regular five-window arrangement below a parapet with a corniced band and stone coping. The outer window bays are incorporated within a superimposed round-headed arch, containing tripartite 4:12:4 sash windows, with fluted stucco fanlights above the first-floor windows. The remaining windows have conventional 12-pane (one 9-pane) hornless sashes in revealed frames. All windows are set within rubbed brick arches. There are three doorways on the front elevation – to numbers 14, 16, and 18 – each with surrounds beneath shaped canopies and panelled doors. The end houses have side entrances; number 20 has a very simple entrance, while number 12 has a returned, storeyed wing with a plain recessed semi-circular opening containing a panelled door and a fanlight with decorative glazing bars. A 12-pane hornless sash window is located above the doorway. Tall brick stacks are present along the roof ridges.
