Description
Morden Terrace is a row of nine houses built in the second quarter of the 19th century, located on Rochester Maidstone Road. The houses are constructed of brick, with some sections rendered and the ground floors stuccoed. They have Welsh slate roofs and rear wings with end stacks, with ridge stacks to the main range.
The terrace was designed as a unified composition, symmetrical in arrangement with a 4:1:4 layout, the central house projecting forward beneath a pedimented gable. This gable features a trefoil window and displays the name "Morden Terrace" between two moulded string courses. Each house has two first-floor windows, featuring plate-glass sashes with margin panes set within reveals, and is topped by a coped parapet with a cornice band. A projecting moulded first-floor cornice runs along the length of the terrace. The ground floor of each house is characterized by three round-headed arches linked by a moulded impost band. These arches contain hornless sashes with margin panes above and a fielded panel door with a fanlight, flanked by paired panelled pilasters, creating a continuous rhythm along the front.
Number 157 has a shop front dating from around 1900, which includes a fascia with console brackets and plate-glass windows. Otherwise, the terrace remains remarkably complete, although number 157 lacks a cornice band.
