Description
Ring's Hill Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse located on Rochester Wouldham Road in Borstal. It is a building of group value. The farmhouse is constructed of brick, now covered with cement render, and has a replacement concrete plain tile roof. Originally the roof had an 'M' profile. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a double pile plan, meaning it was originally two rooms deep.
The front of the farmhouse has two ground floor and two first floor tripartite sash windows with horned frames, and a central blank window on the first floor with an ornate stucco surround. A central doorcase, painted to resemble rustication, frames a four-panel door dating to approximately 1900. Tall brick eaves stacks are present, with two on the north return and one on the south. The north return has three bays with sash windows containing glazing bars.
The rear of the farmhouse is constructed of Flemish bond red brick and has one ground floor and three first floor arched windows, with a central six-panel raised and fielded door. A plat band runs along the first floor and the parapet.
Inside, the ground floor has chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. Six-panel raised and fielded doors are found on the ground floor, while the first floor has two-panel doors. Early 19th century fireplaces with reeded paterae decorate the first floor. A dogleg staircase features stick balusters, turned newel posts, a swan-neck handrail at the angles, and opens into an open well configuration at the attic.
