Description

This is an 18th-century farmhouse with a later cottage attached, located in Nashenden Lane, Rochester. The core of the farmhouse dates to the first quarter of the 18th century and is constructed of knapped flint with brick dressings, topped with a Kent tile roof. The original five-bay front (east side) features three ground-floor sash windows with 12 panes to the north and 16 panes to the south. A 20th-century door has been inserted into the southern bay, replacing what was likely the original entrance; the central bay has a blocked opening indicating the former doorway position. A plat band runs across the first floor, hipped over the central bay. Five 12-pane sash windows are located on the first floor. The window openings are rusticated with brick, and the exterior features two bands of brickwork on each floor. Two hipped dormer windows light the attic space. The roof is hipped with two chimney stacks aligned centrally. A well is situated in the centre of the roof. The garden front includes one ground-floor and one first-floor 12-pane sash window, along with several blocked ground-floor and first-floor windows. A mid-to-late 19th-century three-sided canted bay window adds to the garden elevation. A late 19th-century service wing, now known as Briar Cottage, is attached to the south side of the main farmhouse.
