Description
Fort Clarence is a fort built in 1812, part of the anti-Napoleonic defenses of the Medway towns. It is constructed of stock brick with limestone dressings and is surrounded, where not infilled, by a deep revetted ditch. The fort has three storeys and a basement, featuring corner circular turrets with moulded limestone cornice bands. On the road entrance side, there are three massive stylized machicoulis made of limestone. The fort's plan is brick with relieving arches over two levels of deep embrasures, mostly featuring very shallow arches, although those on the entrance front are round-headed. The interior has not been inspected, and the plan and internal arrangement are not known.
