Description

7 and 8 Mansion Row are a pair of attached houses located in Gillingham, dating from the late 18th century and altered in the early 19th century. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone dressings and have a tile-hung rear, featuring axial stacks behind the ridge and a tiled roof. The style is Mid Georgian, and the plan is double-depth.

The exterior stands three storeys high with a five-window range. The front is nearly symmetrical, featuring a thin brick cornice and parapet. A central timber doorcase has an architrave with scrolled brackets supporting an open pediment, along with panelled reveals and soffit. A fine metal fanlight with enriched spandrels sits above a door with six raised panels. To the right, there is a round-arched doorway flanked by fluted quarter Ionic columns, leading to a door with two round-topped panels and a metal tear-drop fanlight. The windows have rubbed brick flat arches, with plate-glass sashes and 3/3-pane sashes on the second floor.

The rear has three windows, with a single-storey service range for No. 8 and a two-storey late 19th-century extension for No. 7. Inside No. 8, there is a central dogleg stair featuring turned balusters and column newels, with an uncut string and ovolo moulding on the front door. The building is part of a group with Nos 5 and 6 to the right, which were built in 1775.
