Description

No. 103 High Street is a mid-19th century Italianate house, part of a pair that flanks the approach to La Providence, formerly known as Theobald Square. The building is constructed of brick with heavy stucco detailing and features a hipped roof made of Welsh slate. It has a double-depth plan with a central hall and a rear stair, and stands at 2½ storeys tall.

The High Street elevation has a regular two-window range and originally included a porch on the left, which has since been replaced by a late 20th-century plate-glass shop window. Notable architectural features include a prominent moulded cornice, heavy quoining, and plat bands between the floors. The upper half-storey contains four-pane hornless sash windows, while the first floor has horned sash windows set in reveals, complete with moulded window surrounds, cornices, and blind housing. Fine wrought-iron balconies adorn the lower floors, featuring palmettes on the lower rail and festoons on the upper rail, all supported by cast-iron console brackets.

The La Providence elevation has a principal entrance in the central bay, which is narrower and slightly projects. This entrance features a round-headed recessed doorway with an impost band, a large key block, and a moulded cornice, along with a six-panelled door and a fanlight. To either side of the entrance are late 20th-century plate-glass shop windows. The first floor includes tripartite side windows with moulded surrounds and cornices, and balconies similar to those on the High Street. The centre sash window on this floor is similar but lacks a balcony. The second floor windows follow a similar pattern but have simpler brick surrounds. The interior has not been inspected.
